Venice, what can I say, you were stunning. If you haven’t been to Venice, make sure you add it to your list, it’s worth going at least once to explore and take in it’s beauty.
Yes, it is flooded with tourists but it’s such a unique city. We opted to venture out early in the mornings and in the evenings when the tourist rush had seemed to slow down . The weather was very hot and humid during early August when we visited, carry useful sun glasses, hat and UV protection. Keep yourself hydrated.
Lots of places have public taps for drinking water, though we carried our bottled water.
STAY
We stayed at Hotel; NH Laguna (Mestre) with breakfast inclusive
BA hotels and flights, airport pick up and drop off, which was very handy.
MUST DO
- Trip on Gondolas, here bargaining skills are needed to get a good price.
- Sail on Grand Canal in motor water boat, which is the regular transport there on canal side and so useful to hop in out to explore the region, must say value for money.
- Do not forget to pose at Rialto Bridge
- Happily add Venetian mask and glass jewellery to your shopping basket. The area is loaded with shops, so you need to look out for best price during the tourist season.
I love Indian food, so I always make an effort to find one and experience this cuisine on my various travel destinations. Indian cuisine is not very popular here.
Yes, I did find one, 10-15 minutes walk from our hotel.
Ristorante Indiano Bombay Spice
Via Forte Marghera, 129, 30173 Mestre, Venezia VE, Italy
On our third day of stay, we had dinner at this place, starters were good, though main course had a very limited selection for vegetarian and chicken curries.
Tips:
- A lot of places only take cash tip so bring cash/ change.
- Go early when places open before the small restaurants become overwhelming.
- Always make bookings: it’s extremely busy so book restaurants before your trip.
- Not many choice for vegetarians, except the best vegetarian pizzas, chessy lasagne and risotto, so plan well.
- Travel itself is expensive in Venice, explore on day or week bus pass depending on your duration of stay. Also check the bus timings, if staying away from old Venice, as public transport stops before midnight.
- Public toilet were not very readily available, only at the central Venice bus station and railway station. Keep the euro change handy, as long queues, so you do not lose time, while your bladder is bursting.
