The origins of the drink can be traced back to Cuba and the 16th-century Cuban cocktail El Draque, named for Sir Francis Drake. While in this century, it has become wildly popular for downing in the hotter months.
The combination of fresh mint, lime juice, white rum, sugar, and soda water is crisp, delicious, and extremely refreshing. Mojito is slightly more labor-intensive than other cocktails because it involves muddling the mint, the end result is a delicious, mesmerising cocktail that can be enjoyed any time of the year.
This is an authentic recipe for a mojito.
I have shared the recipe for one serving, please increase the contents to your servings.
Mojito
Equipment
- Tall glass, tall handle spoon & muddler
Ingredients
- 1 fresh lime juice
- 1 tsp granulated brown sugar
- small handful mint leaves, plus extra sprig to serve
- 60 ml white rum
- soda water to taste
Instructions
- Muddle the lime juice, sugar and mint leaves in a small jug, crushing the mint as you go – you can use the end of a rolling pin for this. Pour into a tall glass and add a handful of ice.
- Pour over the rum, stirring with a long-handled spoon. Top up with soda water, garnish with mint and serve.
Notes
- I have used Bacardi, please be free to choose the brand of white rum to your taste & preference.
- Soft brown sugar works equally well, if granulated unavailable.
- I normally use the end of rolling pin to muddle, please be free to choose your own muddler.
- For me to get that refreshing flavour & tickle, fresh mint is absolutely vital.
