A visit to Berlin was a stupendous experience, as Berlin has a good diverse mix of history, culture and gorgeous sights that you must see and the city itself embraces the visitors with open arms.
Where to stay
We took British Airways and booked accommodation at the following hotel, with continental breakfast included so not running around for brew early morning.
Hotel was beautiful with boutique interiors and above all well connected to public transport.
Gold Inn Angleterre, Kreuzberg,
31 Friedrichstrasse
Must Do
Brandenburg Gate
Brandenburg Gate is one of Germany’s best-known landmarks that you’ll no doubt want to see. Historically, an old city gate, Brandenburg Gate was rebuilt around 250 years ago and still stands proudly today.Famous as a point for major historical events, it’s a great spot to see when visiting the Reichstag that’s close by.
Glass Dome, Reichstag
The Reichstag is not only home to the German Government but also home to one of the most impressive glass domes in all the world! Open to the public, you can head inside the dome and enjoy the incredible building and views from the top.
Make sure to book your tickets well in advance, we pre-registered ourselves before flying to Berlin as Reichstag is one of the key tourist attractions and fills up away very quickly.
Berlin Wall
Premised as an international memorial for freedom, this massive stretch of the Berlin Wall has been commissioned, featuring over 100 different paintings from artists all across the globe.
Checkpoint Charlie
Checkpoint Charlie was the most famous crossing point between East and West Germany during the time of the Berlin Wall. They have redeveloped checkpoint to show how it once stood.
Our hotel was centrally located, so it was a few minutes walk to checkpoint Charlie, Berlin Wall and you can visit surrounding museum if keen to explore history.
Alexanderplatz
A place to chill out, with shopping, food and fountains. It’s a public square buzzing with local market stalls and many more activities.
I did try hands on some local stall games, was fun.
Tips
We used underground train to reach the hotel which was conveniently located just across the underground station. From Tegel airport,
recommend using underground if covering long distances in the city as fast efficient and value for money.
We used bus to explore around Reichstag and Zoo region. Berlin has good frequency of buses well connected to all major tourist attractions. Economical option for transport would be a day pass or a week’s pass depending on your stay. Some passes include both bus and underground, so explore before purchase.
There are loads of food options from street food to fine dining ones, just make your pick. Most amazing thing is you can all relish this at a very affordable price including the drinks.
